My main topic of research is the flexibility of global and local visual processes in children and adults. Global perception consists to perceive the whole visual scene whereas local processing refers to paying attention to the elements present in the scene. I have demonstrated that children shift from a preference for local visual information to an adult-like preference for global visual information. The transition in visual preference occurs around 6 years of age. Using experimental psychology and brain imaging techniques, I have found that object identification and/or emotional context strongly influenced these processes, even at lower levels of the visual system (e.g., primary visual areas). Moreover, these factors could reduce in certain instance the global preference of adults and affect local/globalvisual processing in children. Taken together, these results suggest that one always looks for the meaning of a scene when perceiving the visual world.
